The US government are suggesting the removal of all gas lighters from the cabin for security reasons - thus increasing the risk of fires in baggage

The US are pushing to remove all gas lighters from the cabin for security reasons. The safety objection is that to increase the number of lighters in
baggage increases the risk of fires of the type shown, subsequently the CAA is moving to block this.

If any AGSC members can provide any evidence of incidents of this sort which may not have been reported to them, either for or against the carriage of
lighters in cabins, the DG dept of the CAA would be interested to hear as part of it's ongoing study of the problem.

Photos of an incident of fire in baggage

11.10 hrs on Monday 13th June 2005 Gatwick AFS called to fire in a ULD baggage sort area South Terminal. On arrival it was found that fire had
self extinguished. The ULD was about to be loaded onto a ZOOM 767-300 Flight No. 24111 bound for Toronto. Initial investigation showed most likely cause of ignition was a cigarette lighter within the affected bag. Aviance were the handlers.
